The dawn of a new era was seen in dentistry with bioceramic materials. Although used mainly for dental implants and coatings for implants, their introduction into endodontics as mineralising materials has made enormous productive changes starting from pulp capping, to apexogenesis, apexification and furcation repair. This book is an attempt to bring into light the properties and the unique capabilities of bioceramics used in pediatric endodontics namely Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC), Bioglass, Calcium Phosphate Ceramics, and Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA). Absolute biocompatibility, osseoconductivity, ability to achieve excellent hermetic seal, formation of chemical bond with the tooth structure, insolubility in tissue fluids, good radiopacity, easy handling characteristics make these materials an attractive option in the area of pediatric endodontics. Bioceramic materials, still in their infancy, has demonstrated incomparable excellence in various treatment modalities like pulp capping, pulpotomy, apexifcation and apexgenesis, root canal sealers, obturating materials, retrograde filling materials, bone filler for periapical defects and management of endodontic mishaps like perfor

Bioceramic Nano-Powders of Biological Origin

The never-ending call for new techniques and materials to repair damaged musculoskeletal tissues, bone defects, and worn out body parts makes bioceramics to be an important research focus. Having a calcium-phosphorus ratio similar to natural bone mineral, there is an increasing interest in calcium phosphates for biomedical applications. For preparing nano-powders of calcium phosphates, nacres are considered as suitable natural materials for dental and bone restorations. Besides their worldwide availability and low cost, they are able to initiate and induce mineralized tissue formation by human osteoblasts in vitro and also exhibit osteogenic and osteoinductive features by developing bonds with bones. With the ultimate objective of preparing inexpensive calcium phosphate bioceramic particles, various raw materials of natural-biological origin including the bones of cuttlefish Sepia officianalis, Chinese sweet water Pearl Powder, the Pacific Kumamoto oyster Crassostrea sikamea, the bivalve mollusc Venus verrucosa and the common European oyster Ostrea edulis were obtained and used in this study.

As recently as 20 years ago, ceramics were widely ignored as potential biomaterials. Interest in bioceramics has increased dramatically over the past decade to the point where it is anticipated they will be the materials of choice for many orthopedic, otologic, maxillofacial and dental applications during the decade of the '90s. Alumina ceramics are being used extensively as articulating comJ1onents in total joint prostheses because of Ithe materials low coefficient of friction and excellent wear resistances. Alumina ceramics are also being used in dental and maxillofacial applica tions because of the materials excellent biocompatibility. Because of its ability to chemically bond to bone, hydroxyapatite is rapidly becoming the material of choice for many dental and maxillofacial applications. For the past decade, one of the most widely researched topics in the field of orthopedics has been the clinical evaluation of joint prostheses based upon stabili zation via tissue ingrowth. It appears that the next generation of joint prostheses will be based upon direct chemically bonding to bone using hydroxyapatite, surface-active glass or surface-active glass ceramics coatings. Resorbable bioceramics are limited to temporary bone space fillers, periodontal pockets treatment and resorbable pharma ceutical delivery systems. Bioceramics is a comprehensive reference textbook covering the history of bio ceramics, present status of bioceramics, and prediction for future use of bioceramics. This book will serve as a major reference for students, as well as experienced bio material researchers. The book presents the state-of-the-art of bioceramics as of 1991.

This is the second edition of the classic book An Introduction to Bioceramics which provides a comprehensive overview of all types of ceramic and glass materials that are used in medicine and dentistry. The enormous growth of the field of bioceramics is due to the recognition by the medical and dental community of the importance of bioactive materials to stimulate repair and regeneration of tissues. This edition includes 21 new chapters that document the science and especially the clinical applications of the new generation of bioceramics in the field of tissue regeneration and repair. Important socioeconomic factors influencing the economics and availability of new medical treatments are covered with updates on regulatory procedures for new biomaterials, methods for technology transfer and ethical issues. The book contains 42 chapters that offer the only comprehensive treatment of the science, technology and clinical applications of all types of bioceramic materials used in medicine and dentistry. Each chapter is written by leaders in their specialized fields and is a thorough review of the subject matter, unlike many conference proceedings. All chapters have been edited to reflect the same writing style, making the book an easy read. The completeness of treatment of all types of bioceramics and their clinical applications makes the book unique in the field and invaluable to all readers.
